How to Get the Mad Men Look

 Becky Harris

The new season of Mad Men started this week, and I watched again and again, studying the sets. Their set designers are so genius – nothing goes into one of their rooms without a lot of thought. My favorites are the new offices at Sterling, Cooper, Draper and Pryce. They have all of the latest Mid-Century pieces, with each character’s office telling us a bit about their personalities.Let’s take a look at some spaces on houzz that have captured that Mad Men look. I mean technically, these spaces existed before the mid-century modern style sets were built, but the sets are supposed to exist mid-century, so is this entire exercise „meta“? I’m still not sure what that word means. I’ll show you a few offices in Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce’s new digs and some modern rooms that have the same look. Feel free to school me in how to use „meta.“

This cheerful modern kitchen uses the same punches of red and yellow with modern silhouettes.

The tulip table, rounded upholstered chairs and pop of red give this room a Mad Men look.

The creatives at the firm have a lounge with an interesting palette of burnt orange, denim indigo and green, as well as a large inspiration board.

This bright green at graphic designer Maya Drozdz’s loft as well as the mid-century furnishings and work hung on the wall serve as their own sort of inspiration board.

Inspiration boards will never go out of style. This one is from an architect’s office.

More creative mulit-purpose spaces. I could see Peggy feeling right at home spit-balling P.R. stunts in here.

I would love for Peggy to chuck her fussy grandma furnishings that she has at home and have a bedroom like this one.

ROGER STERLING’S OFFICE: Nesso lamp, tulip table, mirrored console, chrome accessories, black and white painting and black and white curtains. This one is my favorite.

These printed curtains, tulip table, and Scandinavian chairs have a very similar aesthetic.

Much of the palettes on Mad Men sets are black, white, cream and brown. This is a great use of Mid-Century furnishings in that palatte.

JOAN’S OFFICE: Now that Joan has burst through a glass ceiling and landed in an office separated from the secretarial pool, she’s gone for a traditional masculine aesthetic to show off her new power.

With her new higher salary, I could totally see this being Joan’s newly redecorated living room.

DON’S OFFICE: It hasn’t changed much. He’s still got his abstract painting, neutral color palette, fresh shirt in the drawer and an ample supply of spirits in his office.

CONFERENCE ROOM: The new offices of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce are lacking a conference table. The next few rooms would look great in their office suite!

We haven’t seen Cooper’s new office yet, but he always has the most avant garde paintings in his office, most recently a Rothko. As long as shoes were removed, I think he’d love this space.

MEDIA ROOM: We haven’t seen one of these yet either, but exchange the plasma for a box TV with bad black and white reception, and this could be the media room at Sterling Cooper Draper and Pryce.
